National day of remembrance3/15/2023 The Parliament of Canada established the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in 1991. The hashtag is a call to everyone to question, call out, and speak up against acts of gender-based violence. To share this day on social media, use #OurActionsMatter. Some universities organize candlelight vigils. As part of the White Ribbon Campaign, men wear a white ribbon to express their commitment to end violence against women. Canadians are encouraged to observe a minute of silence. In observance of this day, every federal building in Canada flies flags at half-mast. It ends on December 10th, which is World Human Rights Day. The Days of Remembrance which is observed every year in April and May, is a week-long commemoration of the Holocaust. This international campaign begins with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25th. The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is observed during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The movement is currently active in over 60 countries. Through the campaign, men wear white ribbons as a sign of their pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls. The white ribbon symbolizes the idea of men giving up their arms. This campaign is a global movement of men and boys who are working to end male violence against women and girls. Another group of pro-feminist men in London, Ontario, formed the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC). Two women, Heidi Rathjen and Wendy Cukier, founded the Coalition for Gun Control. In 2007-2008, Congress designated September 25 as the National Day of Remembrance for Murdered Victims.
